Brief Origin of Barangay Name

According to stories of old folks, the first settlers of the Barangay came from Pasdong and also either from Kabayan or Bokod. These people arrived to the place by following the river. Since they were experienced rice planters, they tried planting rice in the muddy and reddish soil that was present in the area and found out that it was suitable for yielding rice. Their efforts were successful because the rice grew robustly and the people had more than enough for their consumption. One day, a stranger was passing by and asked the settlers the name of the place. Everybody answered “TINONGSHAN,” pointing to a portion of land planted with rice. The stranger then interpreted “tinongshan” as a piece of land planted with rice and was also the name of the place. Due to many word connotations, the name “Tinongshan” changed into “Tinongdan” which then was used as the name of the place and later on was adopted as Barangay Tinongdan.

Another version of how the Barangay got its name was passed down from the older generation to the next. Once there lived two childhood sweethearts named Tinong and Ashang. Both lived in the area and grew from a simple life. Their relationship blossomed until they decided to get married. They were both kind and helpful to their neighbors and to the other people in the area. After many years of marriage, the couple was not able to have a child of their own. When Tinong and Ashang died, the residents remembered every good thing the couple did for them. In memory of the two as well as a sign of respect, the people combined the names Tinong and Ashang into one, thus forming the name Tinongshan and used it as the name of the place. Tinongshan later on changed and became Tinongdan.
