Itogon Lights Up Blue for Mental Health

PIO ITOGON October 10, 2024

In observance of World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2024, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Itogon, led by Mayor Bernard S. Waclin, joined the Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA) in this year’s “Light Up Blue for Mental Health” campaign.

With the theme, “It’s Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace,” the Municipal Health Services Office (MHSO), headed by Dr. Oliver P. Guadaña, organized a short seminar on mental health for LGU employees.

Dr. Guadaña explained that mental health encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being. “It influences how we think, feel, and act. It affects how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices,” he said.

“It’s important to understand that mental health is not just the absence of mental illness. It’s about thriving in daily life, experiencing positive emotions, and having the capacity to face challenges effectively,” Dr. Guadaña added.

MHSO personnel Geraldine M. Gom-o presented an overview of mental health and shared the Department of Health’s (DOH) 12 ways to fight stress: Self-awareness, Scheduling, Siesta, Speaking, Sounds, Sensation, Stretching, Socializing, Smiling, Sports, Stress debriefing, and Spirituality.

Health Program Officer Claudette P. Cariño discussed the role of nutrition in mental health, emphasizing that food directly affects the brain. Cariño noted that consuming foods rich in vitamins D, B, magnesium, and Omega-3 can significantly enhance mental health. She also highlighted the importance of adequate rest, quality sleep, and self-care.

Acting Mayor Atty. Jodea Brendalyn R. Acay-Camuyot shared insights on mental health awareness, stating, “Sometimes we need to be reminded of how we perceive ourselves and others—these perceptions can contribute to unhealthy mental conditions.”

She further explained that people often judge others without understanding their struggles and are equally critical of themselves, which can lead to mental health issues. Citing suicide cases in the municipality, Atty. Acay-Camuyot urged all community sectors to advocate for mental health. She emphasized that faith can serve as a guiding force in these efforts.
