The Local Government Unit of Itogon, headed by Mayor Bernard S. Waclin celebrated the observance of the National Disability Rights Week on August 5 at the Fianza Memorial Gymnasium.
The annual recognition of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), formerly known as the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week, is now amended by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., and renamed it to Natonal Disability Rights Week by means of Proclamation No. 597, series of 2024.
The Itogon Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO), headed by Grace O. Pocsol has organized a talent competition among the PWD associations of each barangays in the municipality. Contestants showcased their talents through acting skits related with this year’s theme, “Promoting Inclusion: Celebrating Abilities and Advocating Access.”
“May kapansanan man, may talino naman,” said one in their skit. Another said that PWD meant ‘Persons with Determination’ or ‘Persons with Discount.’ One group exhibited their abilities in their livelihood such as in mining and crafting tools and rags. One group sang in chorus the spiritual song Give Thanks (With a Grateful Heart).
All the performances resonated a common message: their faith and plea to inclusion.
Mayor Bernard S. Waclin lauded the participation of PWDs in the programs and activities of the LGU. He acknowledged their sacrifices in finding the time in preparing their performances. The mayor mentioned that a financial assistance is underway intended for PWDs in the municipality. He further encouraged the participants to remain active involving in government programs. Mayor Waclin also commit to further strengthen the support of the LGU to PWDs of Itogon.
Committee chairman on social services Councilor Norberto I. Pacio mentioned the legislative efforts of the Itogon Sanggunian Bayan Office (SBO) in uplifting the welfare of Itogon PWDs. He further advised all associations to get accredited before the SBO and update and submit their proposals through Annual Investment Plans to avail government assistance.
Present to assist the program was Itogon Disability Affairs Officer Eva Marie Guibac. Judges were Itogon Commission on Elections (COMELEC) Officer Reynaldo Oliva, Tourism Officer Ferdinand Sapalong, and Itogon Public Information Officer (PIO) – designate Victorio Palangdan Jr.
