To mark Dengue Awareness Month this June, the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Itogon, in collaboration with the Municipal Health Services Office (MHSO), hosted the ‘Ukulele Against Dengue’ event on June 3, 2024, at the Fianza Memorial Gymnasium, Poblacion.
Elementary students showcased an original song promoting the Department of Health’s (DOH) 5S Strategy: Search and Destroy, Self-protection Measures, Seek Consultation, Support Fogging in Outbreak Areas, and Sustain Hydration.
Judges for the competition included ukulele instructor Pheobe C. Tores, local singer-songwriter Laurie Amor Ventura, and Jessica Guibong from the Department of Health – Cordillera.
Itogon Central School claimed first place, followed by Tabu Elementary School and Goldfield Elementary School.
Dr. Oliver Guadaña, head of the MHSO, stated that the competition aimed to divert the youth’s attention from excessive mobile phone use while educating them on practical dengue prevention measures.
DOH CAR representative Jessica Guibong praised the MHSO for its innovative approach to promoting DOH programs.
Mayor Bernard Waclin commended the students, teachers, and schools for their participation and encouraged the youth to apply their newfound knowledge to prevent dengue.
The event also featured performances by students from Jose Opiles Elementary School, Solomon Solano Elementary School, Fianza Elementary School, the Poblacion Women’s Ukulele Group, the Voices in Praise group from Loacan, and Laurie Ventura.
