The Itogon Municipal Health Services Office (MHSO), led by Dr. Oliver P. Guadaña, has reported a spike in dengue cases and other weather-related health risks.
Since the beginning of this year, the MHSO has recorded 110 dengue cases, 525 cases of influenza-like illnesses, and five incidents of mushroom poisoning. MHSO personnel Claudette Pis-oy stated that the increase in cases may be attributed to the recent monsoon rains. She added that there has been a higher number of cases this year compared to last year, suggesting that residents may have become complacent in their health risk prevention practices.
The Department of Health, together with the MHSO, has been promoting prevention methods to combat dengue using the 5S Strategy: Search and destroy breeding places; Secure self-protection; Seek early consultation; Support fogging or spraying; and Sustain hydration. They also recommend boosting one’s immune system by eating healthily, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep. The Health Department encourages residents to avoid consuming wild mushrooms unless they are familiar with which ones are edible.
