LGU Itogon, under the leadership of Mayor Bernard S. Waclin, through the Municipal Agriculture Office headed by Berto Bayeng, is gearing up to conduct a month-long celebration of Farmers’ and Fisherfolks’ Month this May.
This marks the first observance of the celebration following the passing of LGU Itogon Ordinance No. 134, series of 2023, which institutionalized the month of May every year as Farmers’ and Fisherfolks’ Month in the Municipality of Itogon. The ordinance aims to raise awareness about the importance of agriculture and fisheries in the local economy by recognizing the achievements and contributions of farmers and fisherfolks to the sustainable development of the municipality. Additionally, it seeks to encourage community participation in activities involving farming and fishing.
A variety of activities are lined up for the month-long celebration in line with this year’s theme, “Magsasaka at Mangingisda Tungo sa Masaganang Agrikultura at Maunlad na Ekonomiya.”
LGU Itogon is kicking off the celebration with a cacao chocolate tasting and the conduct of an information and education campaign on farmers’ profiling on May 7 at the Municipal Gym, Poblacion, followed by farm visits in Tinongdan, Tuding, and Virac on May 8.
Various trainings and seminars for local farmers and fisherfolks are also part of the celebration, including the practice of writing project proposals on May 9-10, preparation of business model canvasses on May 14, crafting of resolutions on May 21-22, the process of forming a farmers’ association on May 23, and training on organic feed formulation on May 23-24.
On May 16-17, spaying and neutering, anti-rabies vaccination, deworming, and pet consultations are scheduled at the Municipal Gym, Poblacion.
Furthermore, a Market Encounter is planned from May 27-31 at the Municipal Grounds, Poblacion.
A culminating activity is scheduled on May 31 at the municipal gym, capping the celebration with a farmers’ and fisherfolks’ parade, awarding, and closing program.
