July 10, 2026 – More than 70 pigs in Barangay Tuding have tested positive for African Swine Fever (ASF), according to LGU Itogon Veterinarian II Dr. Franklin P. Balanban.
He said depopulation has begun involving pigs owned by seven swine raisers in Sitios Baguio Gold, Yanggacan, and Cupao.
Dr. Balanban said blood samples collected from the affected pigs were tested and confirmed positive for ASF by the Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (RADDL).
He identified the possible sources of the outbreak as swill feeding (arasaw), the sale of infected pork, the movement of farmers, river contamination, and direct contact with contaminated objects such as vehicles and footwear.
Immediate response measures were carried out in coordination with the Provincial Veterinary Office and the Barangay Tuding LGU. Aside from the mandatory depopulation, mass disinfection of affected pigpens and farm premises was also conducted.
On Wednesday, Mayor Bernard S. Waclin issued Executive Order No. 38, s. 2026, imposing strict regulations on the movement of live swine and pork products following the reported ASF case.
Dr. Balanban continues to remind swine raisers and the public to strengthen farm biosecurity measures by avoiding unnecessary movement from one piggery to another and refraining from buying pork from unverified sources or sellers.
He also encouraged the immediate reporting of suspected ASF cases and full cooperation in implementing disease control protocols to prevent the further spread of the disease to other areas.
