Brief Origin of Barangay Name

Long time ago, somewhere at the far north of this place along the Agno River, lived some Ibalois who came from the south to find a suitable place to live. Upon reaching this place, it was wilderness, with sturdy looking pine trees. There were also tall and green “Doacan” that grew luxuriantly along the brooks. Swampy areas and streams had cool and fresh water, gleaming while wild deer and wild boars roamed undistributed in the area. The place was abundant with trees and the rivers with fishes and eels.

Before they began to make shelter, they have to clean the plain area that is thickly covered by a family of bamboo called “DOACAN” in Ibaloi. They began to raise a few heads of cattle and swine. They also planted root crops such as gabi and camote (sweet potato). Their need for meat was easily met through hunting around the place where wild animals roamed in numbers.

One time, some of the inhabitants went hunting on the western part of this place. A whole day had passed yet they weren’t able to hunt anything instead a glowing object attracted them. Thinking that it was a glowing ember, they went nearer to fetch fire to light out their way home. To their surprise, they realized that the said object was gold and they hurriedly covered it with a thick blanket of grass in order to conceal it from their companions. They hurriedly traced their way home and prayed all the way to almighty “KABUNIAN” that their discovery shouldn’t be a dream. It was finally known to be a real gold. This inspired them to reside in this place peacefully and they named it “DOACAN” and now “LOACAN.”
